ENEA and the National Research Council's Institute for Terrestrial Ecosystems Research (CNR-Iret) organised ICOS Italy meets in Lampedusa. The event had the dual objective of taking stock of the ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) European research infrastructure, the results achieved and future prospects, and the final stages of the project “Strengthening the ICOS-Italy Observation Network in the Mediterranean”, financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and launched in 2019. Also speaking at the event being held in the Pelagie Islands Marine Protected Area were the presidents of CNR and ENEA, Maria Chiara Carrozza and Gilberto Dialuce.

The Economic and Environmental Sustainability Index (ISEA) is a new indicator developed at ENEA to calculate the energy, economic and environmental impact of various materials used in thermal insulation for buildings according to the type of construction and the climate zone. The ENEA researchers performed energy simulations on buildings in 60 Italian cities considered the most representative in terms of number of homes, population and climate characteristics (findings were published in the online magazine “Sustainability”).

A state-of-the-art 3D laser printing system, more flexible and suitable for highly innovative SMEs, is being developed as part of the project InSPiRATiON, funded by the Ministry of University and Research with half of the over than 6 million euro budget. The programme includes ENEA, Marrelli Health srl, OMPM srl and Consortium CALEF, acting through its implementing partners LASIT spa, EL.EN spa, Calabria University, Salerno University, Bari Polytechnic and Italian Welding Institute.

EUBCE 2023, the largest international conference on biomass currently underway in Bologna, attended by over 1500 delegates and visitors from more than 70 countries, is being chaired by Isabella De Bari, head of the ENEA Laboratory of Technologies and Processes for Biorefineries and Green Chemistry at the Trisaia Research Center. She is the first Italian woman to hold this position. Graduated in chemistry, she has been working at Enea since 1998, where she coordinates projects on advanced biofuels and green chemistry, collaborating with international research institutes and industrial stakeholders.

Cutting-edge biotechnology and supercomputers to save bees threatened by climate change, pollution, pesticides and some invasive pests which destroy hives. The 5x1000 donation of tax payers who choose to support ENEA research studies - indicating the tax code 01320740580 in their 2023 tax return - will be allocated to these activities.

ENEA, EUROfusion and CINECA signed an agreement which provides for an investment of 50 million euros over 5 years to build a latest generation supercomputer for fusion energy research. The new High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure, capable of performing approximately 47 million billion operations per second, will be installed at the Cineca headquarters in Casalecchio di Reno (Bologna) at the end of 2023 and will become part of the ecosystem of the Bologna Technopole. It will be dedicated to the numerical simulation of plasma physics and the structural analysis of advanced materials for nuclear fusion, a safe and sustainable energy source for future generations.
