The entire electricity demand of the national residential sector could be satisfied with photovoltaic panels installed on approximately 30% of the total roof surface area of residential buildings in our country, equivalent to almost the entire eligible rooftop area, as  estimated by ENEA in the study published in the open access journal Energies which describes the actual potential of photovoltaics in Italy in 2030 and 2050 using just the roof area of existing buildings, without consuming further land.

Rome, 24 July 2023 - Despite significantly lower prices, energy consumption continued to decrease in the first half of 2023 (-5% compared to the same period in 2022) following the sharp drop in the fourth quarter of 2022 (-12%). These were the findings of the quarterly update of the ENEA analysis of the Italian energy system, which also showed a new significant reduction in CO₂ emissions (-9%), already down between October and December 2022 after six consecutive quarterly increases.

ENEA Director General Giorgio Graditi has been confirmed until 31 December 2024 as President of MEDENER, the association of national energy efficiency and renewable energy agencies in the Mediterranean. The appointment was decided by the association's general assembly held at the ENEA headquarters in Rome, which also confirmed Roberta Boniotti of ENEA's Innovation and Development Directorate as secretary general.

Researchers at the ENEA Center in Portici (Naples), in collaboration with the University of Naples Federico II, have created a high-resolution three-dimensional cadastral map to calculate the photovoltaic energy potential to be installed on roofs or other suitable urban surfaces.
