A team of ENEA researchers performed a bio-cleaning intervention to restore the Madonna del Parto (Our Lady of ChildBirth), a Renaissance marble statue by Jacopo Sansovino housed at the Basilica of St. Augustine in Rome and an object of devotion for pregnant women for centuries.

Italy is the country in Europe with the highest water exploitation index, 9.2 billion cubic metres, of which 30.5% occurring in the hydrographic district of the river Po with a 42% leakage rate of the total flow fed into the network. At the same time, our country has the largest withdrawal of mineral water in the Old Continent, a figure increasing steadily, combined with high hydrogeological vulnerability, as the recent emergency events have shown.

ENEA has developed a ceramic prototype brazier for pellet stoves capable of optimizing the combustion process for heat production and cutting polluting emissions. It was developed using 3D printing by the Faenza Materials Technologies Laboratory as part of the Proof of Concept program, promoted by ENEA to increase transfer of innovative technologies to companies and reduce the gap between research results and their potential use/marketing.

Viviana Cigolotti, head of the ENEA Laboratory of Energy Storage, Batteries and Technologies for Hydrogen Use and Production, has been appointed leader of the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Piero Lunghi Conference (EFC23), organized by ATENA and ENEA, in collaboration with the Universities of Naples Parthenope and Perugia, which this year will take place in Italy, in Capri (Naples) on September 13-15, 2023.

The Life Blue Lakes roadshow has begun. Theatrical performances, workshops, training courses and field activities where art and science meet to find a common language, to raise public awareness on environmental issues, new pollutants and microplastics dispersion in lakes. The initiative, carried out by ENEA and Legambiente in collaboration with the Dynamis theater company, is part of the European Life Blue Lakes, which has the objective of preventing and reducing the presence of microplastics in Italian lakes, defining shared sampling and analysis protocols and promoting good practices for institutions, local authorities, companies and citizens.

An ENEA-patented electronic solar compass which provides very accurate measurements has made it possible to determine the exact orientation of the statues in the Emperor Tiberius’ Summer villa in Sperlonga (Latina) during the winter solstice.
