A team of researchers from ENEA, Bari Polytechnic and Roma Tre University has designed an AI-based solution to prevent possible power outages caused by heat waves. Developed as part of the RAFAEL project, funded by the Ministry of University and Research, this innovative approach based on machine learning techniques was tested on a large electricity distribution network in Southern Italy and its outcomes were published in the scientific journal IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.

ENEA is providing 5.5 million euros over the next three years to fund its in-house Proof of Concept (PoC) programme aimed at narrowing the gap between research and industrial application. Tomorrow 12 May, the first call for tenders dedicated to companies will be published on the ENEA website, for an amount of around half a million euro, intended to co-finance the development of ENEA technologies with companies that express their interest by 9 June 2023. This first investment, funded with resources made available by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (MIMIT) under the PNRR, is in addition to the 5 million internal fund - a further 1 million in 2023, 2 million in 2024 and 2 million in 2025 – always dedicated to finance PoC projects in collaboration with enterprises.

 A European consortium involving partners from France (CNRS - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Italy (ENEA, Sapienza University of Rome and RISE Technology) and Spain (UPV - Universitat Politècnica de València and CIPF - Centro Investigación Príncipe Felipe), is developing a device mounted with a mini-electrode conformable to the curvature of the spinal cord to regenerate injuries.

 ENEA has developed a diagnostic kit for dairy companies and analysis laboratories capable to detect traces of aflatoxin M1[1] (a known carcinogenic which comes from animals fed with contaminated feed) in raw milk, rapidly, effectively and cheaply. The findings of a study conducted jointly with the University of Turin were published in the scientific journal Toxins.

Three years after the announcement of the first nationwide lockdown (9 March 2020), the ENEA study on its impact on air quality, with a focus on Rome, published in the journal Atmospheric Pollution Research, shows a significant air pollution reduction in Italy since the second half of March to April 2020, with daily peaks decreasing by 30%, and a following emission increase in May, when restrictions on people’s mobility and industrial activities were partially removed.

Tracing through a digital platform the entire journey of an item of clothing, from raw material to end-of-life, with the blockchain, is the objective of the project TRICK, which includes ENEA in the implementing consortium, made up of 31 companies, associations, non-profit organizations and research centers from 11 countries. The project, funded by the Horizon 2020 framework programme, is coordinated by Lanificio Fratelli Piacenza Spa and enables fashion companies to collect verified and unchangeable data on the history of products, through the innovative "block chains" technology.
