In the remote field camp of Little Dome C, Antarctica, just a few kilometers away from Concordia Station, an international team made up of 16 researchers and logistics personnel has started the third deep drilling campaign for the European project Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice. They will work for over two months on the Antarctic plateau at 3.200 meters above sea level, where the average summer temperature is -35°C. Over the next few years, the analysis of an ice core extracted from the surface to a depth of 2.7 km will enable the reconstruction of the world’s climate history going back in time 1.5 million years to reveal information on temperature and on the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The mission, managed by the Cnr, ENEA and OGS as part of the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA), involves around 130 researchers and technicians with the support of Armed Forces personnel. The 39th Italian scientific expedition to Antarctica began with the opening of the "Mario Zucchelli" station in Terra Nova Bay. The summer campaign, lasting over 4 months, will involve about 130 researchers and technicians working on 31 research projects on atmospheric sciences, geology, paleoclimate, biology, oceanography and astronomy.

Research progress on liquefied gases to attain the EU decarbonisation targets in the medium and long term. The agreement signed by Assogasliquidi-Federchimica and ENEA aims at accelerating a path already taken before the pandemic: significantly increase production of bioLPG, bioLNG and other renewable products such as dimethyl ether (DME) and biogas, obtained through the processing of various types of organic waste.

ENEA has entered the IDEM Federation (Distributed Infrastructure for Italian Education and Research), an international network of research bodies and universities managed and coordinated by the GARR (Group for the Harmonization of Research Networks), an national ultra-broadband network dedicated to the education and research community. A first step to access, by prior agreement, several services like e-learning platforms, digital libraries, Wi-Fi networks, electronic register.

On the eve of the heating season, ENEA outlines some tips to save energy and cut your bills without compromising on comfort. First, monitor power consumption by setting up a smart meter, an electronic device used for reading energy consumption in real-time which connects with your mobile phone through an app.

Promoting Renewable Energy Communities (CER), supporting local PAs and citizens in the phases of implementation and management is the objective of the ENEA Observatory comprising approximaately forty members, including research institutes, local authorities, associations, companies and professionals. The network, designed to promote a national development roadmap, also aims to identify the critical issues of the “CER supply chain”  at national, local and citizen level, collaborating with institutions to formulate enabling policies benefiting communities also through adoption of specific legislative and administrative measures.
