Developing an innovative cogeneration system with fuel cells capable of operating with mixed hydrogen to produce "carbon free" electricity and heat, promoting diffusion of renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, is the objective of the project SO-FREE coordinated by ENEA and including eight other partners from industries and research institutions. The goal is to create a new generation of solid oxide fuel cells capable of operating with different mixtures of combustible gases (biogas and mixtures of natural gas and hydrogen) for an efficient, zero emission, flexible electricity and heat production. A cogeneration system designed for end users in the residential, commercial and agricultural sectors.
The 'ocean fever' is still rising. In 2023 seawater temperatures increased, recording a new record in water warming, with an increase in heat content, stratification and salinity. This is what emerges from the New Record Ocean temperatures and related climate indicators in 2023 article, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.
The first hydrogen vehicle for freight transport, developed by an all-Italian team comprising Athena Consortium, ENEA, University of Naples 'Parthenope' and Cantieri del Mediterraneo, was presented in the port of Valencia, Spain.
ENEA has developed 12 tips for optimizing rooftop photovoltaic on residential buildings also in winter, addressed at both users of over one million domestic systems, 82.5% of the approximately 1.23 millions in operation in Italy in 2022 [1], and those who intend to install a system for the first time. Particular attention should be paid to orientation, inclination and the shadowing effect generated by the solar panels, in addition to the right battery size, which must be proportionate to the power of the system.
Italy will host the 2024 edition of the SolarPACES Conference, the world's leading event for concentrated solar thermal technologies, which returns to Europe after over a decade of editions hosted on the other four continents. The news was released during the final session of the 2023 edition which took place in Sydney, Australia. ENEA represents Italy within the Executive Committee of the Technological Collaboration Program (TCP) and will be the event coordinator.
An ENEA research team has developed an innovative prototype called ProBREAST- presented at the International Breast Cancer Day, established by the World Health Organization to raise awareness and promote early detection to treat breast cancer - with more effective and less invasive radiation therapy, protecting normal tissues from collateral damage associated with radiotherapy.
