The Italian research vessel Laura Bassi left the port of Lyttelton, in New Zealand, heading to Antarctica in support of research activities linked to three different projects on the study of physical and biogeochemistry of specific Antarctic areas. This marked the start of the oceanographic campaign of the 39th expedition to Antarctica, funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) as part of the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA), coordinated by the Cnr for scientific activities, ENEA for planning and logistics and OGS - National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – for technical and scientific management of the icebreaker Laura Bassi. The ship will circumnavigate the entire Ross Sea and conclude its Antarctic mission in New Zealand in March 2024, after 60 days.

ENEA has developed a technology capable of quickly identifying damaged hazelnuts in in-shell fruits and remove them before industrial processing. The system, composed of a solid-state Terahertz (THz) source and a detector, measures moisture content in hazelnuts, a qualitative parameter considered very important for its storage capacity by the companies operating in the field.

New calcium-ion batteries, as an alternative to lithium-ion ones for applications in electric mobility and energy storage in smart grids, will be developed as part of the “ACTEA” project, conducted by ENEA and Sapienza University of Rome (coordinator) and funded by the Lazio Region.

Analysing the technological and socio-economic challenges regions with high carbon dioxide emissions face on the way to energy transition was the focus of the European project ENTRANCES, which comprised 12 EU countries and 14 partners, including ENEA and Knowledge and Innovation (K&I) for Italy and the University of La Coruña (Spain) as coordinator.

A new version of DOCET, the simplified software for the energy performance certification of residential buildings, developed by ENEA in collaboration with Cnr- Institute for Construction Technologies - and addressed to workers in the construction sector, is free to download on the ENEA portal.

​RSE, ENEA and CREA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to share scientific knowledge and skills and promote research and development of the energy production and consumption sectors, reconciling energy and agriculture to facilitate the pursuit of technical, environmental, economic sustainability and social inclusion goals. The agro-energy sector, due to its intrinsic characteristics, is a strategic asset for the national economy and, like other production sectors, will be called upon to contribute to the decarbonisation of the manufacturing and economic systems.
