ENEA will preside over the 30th SolarPACES conference, the world’s leading event for concentrated solar thermal technologies which will take place this year in Rome (8 - 11 October 2024). Luca Turchetti, ENEA researcher at the Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources Department, was designated chairperson of the event, which has been attended by representatives from research, industry and institutions from around the world since the first edition in 1982.
In Italy, households are not the only source of saving. Almost a fifth of what we produce comes from recycling: our circular material use rate is second only to France. Italy ranks first in terms of circularity of production among the top five EU economies: resource productivity is worth on average 3.7 euro per kilo, compared to the EU average of 2.5 euro per kilo. In short, our economic and production system loves circularity, and so do small and medium-sized enterprises: 65% said they are implementing circular economy practices, more than double compared to 2021.
In order to improve the energy performance of central PA buildings, 430 million euro have been invested thanks to the Central Public Administration Buildings Requalification Program (PREPAC), which every year funds projects with the purpose of making more efficient at least 3% of the 16 million of m2 of surface. This is shown by the ENEA report “The program for the energy requalification of central public administration buildings”, which contains the analysis of the 310 projects funded in the period 2014-2022 to requalify over 2.5 million m2 (approximately 16% of the total), including Palazzo Chigi.
ENEA has developed a low-cost bioprinter, called BioVERVE, capable of 'reproducing' 3D models of tumors, with the aim of advancing research on cancer treatment. Created in collaboration with the Tuscan company Kentstrapper Srl, thanks to a POC loan, it provides a performance comparable to professional bioprinters, capable of obtaining three-dimensional cellular structures with accuracy and fast print speed (a few dozen of seconds per structure).
Nutritious, tasty and sustainable. It’s the plant-based food ENEA is creating with the aim of offering healthier and more sustainable foods, battling the impact of climate change which threatens soil, health, quality and productivity of plants and, therefore, food security. It’s the so-called 'cellular agriculture', i.e. the production - starting from plants of agronomic interest - of foods with a wide variety of molecules useful for health, without soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.
A supercomputer capable of performing up to 1.4 million billion operations per second, a cutting-edge laboratory for the creation of innovative and high-efficiency solar cells, cutting-edge expertise for the development of sustainable photovoltaic modules, are the resources the ENEA Department of Energy Technologies and Renewable Sources makes available to the VIPERLAB project, promoting research and development of perovskite photovoltaic devices by accessing 13 of the major European research infrastructures specialized in the creation, characterization, calculation and modeling of perovskite-based photovoltaic devices.
