Income tax return: Health, a 5x1000 tax donation to ENEA for research on nanoplastics in human lungs
Assessing the human health risks posed by nanoplastics floating in the air and their impact on the lungs is the objective of “PlasticBreath”, an innovative scientific research project conducted by researchers at the ENEA Health and the Environment Laboratory, which gathers key information to develop and implement sustainable air quality policies. Taxpayers may support the ENEA project by indicating the tax code 01320740580 as the recipient of the 5x1000 donation in this year’s tax return.
In 2023 over 10 thousand energy diagnoses were sent to ENEA by approximately 6 thousand Italian companies, bringing the overall number of diagnoses since 2015, the year the obligation came into force, to almost 40 thousand, as shown by the report presented by ENEA, in which Italy confirms its top position in the EU ranking of the most virtuous countries with regard to implementing the European Directive on energy efficiency.
Researchers at the ENEA Portici Research Center (Naples) have patented a low-cost process to make self-cleaning solar mirrors without affecting their reflective properties, reducing the cost of the electricity generated and water consumption for cleaning operations.

Improving sustainability and performance of fourth generation nuclear reactors[1] by encouraging the recycling of used nuclear fuel to leave long-lived waste behind is the objective of the project PuMMA (Plutonium Management for More Agility), comprising 20 partners from 12 European countries, including ENEA for Italy.
Researchers at the ENEA Trisaia Research Center (Matera) have patented a process, easily transferable to manufacturing scale, to extract torularhodin - a carotenoid with anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can be used in nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals production - from red yeasts.
