In 2023, Italy generated energy savings of more than 3.6 Mtoe - equal to the total electricity consumption of Lazio and Tuscany - thanks to projects launched in 2021 through support measures to comply with the obligations of the European Energy Efficiency Directive, equivalent to 92 percent of the target set for 2023 by the PNIEC, as shown in the 13th ENEA Annual Report on Energy Efficiency presented at a conference in Rome attended by the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

Producing a 3D image of the neutron flux to study the characteristics of the plasma used in ITER[1], the reactor under construction in Cadarache (southern France) that aims to achieve fusion energy production in a safe and environment-friendly way, is the objective of the Radial Neutron Camera (RNC), a diagnostic tool funded by Fusion For Energy[2], which ENEA is developing as part of a consortium of European research institutes, which it coordinates with the Diagnostics Laboratory at its Frascati Research Center (Rome).

ENEA will use for the first time artificial intelligence in Antarctica to count and classify Adelia penguins living near the Italian Station Mario Zucchelli applying a method based on drones, artificial intelligence (AI) and the ENEA supercomputer CRESCO.

LENICALC is a tool developed by ENEA to assess the energy performance of lighting in buildings, namely the Lighting Energy Numeric Indicator (LENI) index, required by the 2021 UNI EN 15193 standard on energy requirements for lighting.

Two innovative rapid screening systems to detect the dose of ionizing radiation absorbed in the event of a large-scale radiological or nuclear accident have been developed as part of the NATO BioPhyMeTRE project, coordinated by ENEA and comprising the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the Institute of Radiation Safety and Ecology (Kazakhstan) and the Ruđer Bošković Institute (Croatia).

Reducing energy consumption in Italian small islands while protecting the environment, safety and housing comfort is the goal of the ENEA project conducted as part of the activities of the Electricity System Research program to promote energy efficiency as a tool for the decarbonization of the energy system.
