Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development
Environment: ENEA and ItaliaMeteo sign strategic alliance for climate and meteorological research
ENEA and ItaliaMeteo, the Italian Agency for Meteorology and Climatology, have signed a five-year framework agreement to combine their expertise and establish a structured collaboration in the fields of climatology, meteorology, and marine modelling.
The agreement paves the way for the development of a joint portfolio of research programs, training initiatives, technology transfer, and services. The partnership stems from the recognition that collaboration between the two public entities can generate significant opportunities for the development and in-depth study of highly relevant scientific topics for the country.
The collaboration will focus on four main areas:
- National and international research projects to deepen understanding of climatic and meteorological phenomena;
- Creation of advanced research infrastructures for observation, modelling and data analysis;
- Enhancing operational services for agriculture, water resource management, renewable energy and risk prevention;
- Dissemination of scientific results through training, communication and technology transfer activities to promote their application in business and local contexts.
Accredited as a national meteorological agency since 2024, ENEA will contribute its technical expertise and extensive scientific network developed through participation in international initiatives such as Copernicus, as well as numerous climate change projects.
ItaliaMeteo is the national meteorological service established to strengthen and coordinate meteorological, climatic and marine weather monitoring and forecasting activities in close cooperation with national and regional meteorological agencies. It supports citizens, the Civil Protection Department, institutions and businesses by providing meteorological and climatic products and services, processing and analyzing data, promoting and implementing research and development programs, participating in national and international projects, and carrying out training and outreach activities.
